A Fun & Budget-Friendly Date Idea That’s Totally Unexpected!

t’s always nice to mix things up on date night (or day)!

Dinner and movie can be fun (Will and I are both movie fanatics) but it’s nice to find fun new ways to spend time together as a couple. It’s also nice when these new date activities don’t break the bank!

Today I’m sharing one of my favorite date spots as of late, Wildlife Learning Center!

In this post we’ll chat about:

  • Why I Recommend WLC for your next date spot
  • What to Wear + Tips for Your Visit
  • All the Details: Cost + Location

WHY IT’S A PERFECT DATE SPOT

The Wildlife Learning Center checks off all the boxes on my perfect (outdoor) date checklist! It’s affordable, it’s unique, your visit has a positive impact, and it’s stress-free but still exciting!

It is also the perfect setting to have a conversation and connect, unlike a movie or a loud bar. You can chat about your favorite animal as a kid and learn more about each other. Even after 9 years together, I still find out new things about Will when we have time to connect like this.

To top it all off, this date spot rocks because you feel good knowing that the money you spend helps the center provide care for their current and incoming animals and it supports their efforts to educate the public on the importance of caring for wildlife and the environment. Need I say more?!

If I haven’t convinced you to visit WLC for your next date yet, you should know that you can share a special moment with your boo and a porcupine! (more on this below)

WHAT TO WEAR + TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT

This is not a date spot that calls for heels and a strappy little dress!

You’ll be walking on a dirt (sometimes mud) path so you’ll want to be in sneakers, boots, or even rain shoes.

If you still want to dress up, this is a date after all, I would recommend a cute pair of jeans and a pretty blouse or sweater. You can also do a leather jacket + black jean look, total urban Indiana Jones vibes.

A few tips for your first visit:

  • Admission doesn’t cover any up close and personal animal encounters. Those start at $50+ and depend on availability. I HIGHLY recommend you book an animal experience because they’re so much fun! We fed the porcupines and now I’m a little obsessed with porcupines! *Note: Each encounter is different but you usually get to feed/pet an animal and learn more about it from its caretaker
  • Plan to have lunch/dinner off-site. They don’t have a cafe or restaurant on site so plan on heading back to L.A. to eat.
  • Take your time! The Wildlife Learning Center is small so take your time visiting each enclosure and attend one of their hourly (and complimentary) animal presentations to learn more about a creature up close. These presentations aren’t the same as an actual encounter but they’re still tons of fun.

WHAT IS THE WILDLIFE EARNING CENTER AND WHERE IS IT LOCATED?

They sum it up nicely on the website:

“Wildlife Learning Center (WLC) is a zoological park nestled in an old olive grove in Sylmar, California, where visitors can appreciate and learn about animals from around the world. WLC was founded to provide public education in the life sciences, conservation, and our environment.”
