Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald delivered a mind boggling revelation!
If you haven’t seen the latest installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, you’re going to want to bookmark this post and come back later because there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD! Go ahead, you can disapparate now!
The Big Secret
As soon the credits started rolling, I’m sure you had just as many questions as me about the huge revelation that the film closed with.
Credence is a Dumbledore?!
Aurelius Dumbledore to be exact.
Your first few thoughts were probably: is there any logical way this can be true? Does the timeline match up? What does Dumbledore’s family tree look like?
Well, there is one leading theory that seems to have a clear and logical explanation for most of these questions. So let’s break it down.
What is an Obscurus?
First, a quick refresher:
An Obscurus is the manifestation of the repressed energy of a magical child (known as an Obscurial). Described as a “dark” and “parasitic” force, an Obscurus was created when the child in question consciously attempted to repress their talent or were forced to do so through physical or psychological abuse. This energy could manifest itself as a separate entity that can erupt in violent, destructive fury (source: Harry potter Wikia)
As we know, Credence is an Obscurial and although most don’t live to be adults, he appears to be an exception.
The other Obscurial we’re most familiar with is, Ariana Dumbledore.
Although none of the Harry Potter books officially label her as such, she fits the description very well.
When Ariana was a small girl, she was attacked by Muggle boys who saw her practicing magic. This left her so traumatized that it made her magical abilities uncontrollable. At only 14 years old she lost control and created a magical explosion that killed her mother, Kendra Dumbledore.
Not much of a stretch to call her an Obscurial, right?
Grindelwald Becomes Fascinated with Obscurials
Ariana died after being hit during a 3-way duel between her brothers Albus, Aberforth and Gellert Grindelwald.
But, by this time Grindelwald would have been well aware of Ariana’s powerful magical fits.
The dark wizard likely became intrigued by her immense power and in turn, deeply fascinated by Obscurials.
Finding a New Obscurius
Ever since Ariana, it seems that Grindelwald has been looking for an Obscurial he can use to bring his new world order into existence.
So what does all of this have to do with Credence?
Well, I found an interesting theory on Elite Daily that suggests that Ariana Dumbledore’s Obscurus is the same Obscurus that is now infecting Credence!
Credence is a Dumbledore – Sort of
Even though Credence is likely not a Dumbledore by blood, he could have a magical connection to Albus’ late sister.
This would explain why the baby phoenix found its way to Credence in his time of need.
” There’s a story in my family that a phoenix will come to any Dumbledore who is in desperate need.” – Albus Dumbledore, Fantastic Beasts : The Crimes of Grindelwald
This also then becomes the perfect origin story for Fawkes!
Has Any of This Been Confirmed?
Not at all!
We won’t have any “official” answers until the third film hits theaters November 2020.
What Do You Think?
Is Credence really infected with Ariana’s Obscurus? Or is he really a Dumbledore from a secret affair? Let me know your thoughts and theories in the comment section below!
