Unfortunately, that’s not the case when it comes to the soon to be released film, Winchester. (In theaters February 2nd)
Based on a true story, the film promises an eerie recounting of the history and lore surrounding the 160 room mansion known as the Winchester Mystery House. There’s no doubt that Hollywood will dial up the “scare factor” but the story behind the mansion is pretty creepy even without the added drama!
After losing her one-month-old daughter and husband, a very distraught Sarah Winchester began seeing spiritual mediums and mentalists in hopes of contacting her family on the other side.
One such medium advised her to move west and build a large home to appease the spirits of everyone that had died at the hand of her late husband’s guns (Her husband, Will, owned a large portion of the family business, Winchester Rifle ). Sarah purchased an unfinished farmhouse in Santa Clara Valley and started construction right away.
Today, the Winchester Mystery House is filled to the brim with peculiar passageways, windows in floors, and other oddities. It has no shortage of spooky charm!
When it comes to the “haunted” tales surrounding the mansion, it’s hard to discern where the line falls between fact and fiction.
As some of the legends go, Sarah held many seances in her home and slept in a different bedroom every night to prevent the spirits from finding her. I’ve also read stories about some of her encounters with angry spirits but again, is there any way for us to truly know what she experienced? Maybe we should hold a seance and ask her. Eeek! That thought gives me goosebumps!
